Capturing Screen Shots/Details for a manual

I am writing some instruction manuals and need to include screenshots and (more importantly) shots of small portions of screens (buttons etc).
Anyone got any advice about the best (easiest & cheapest) way to accomplish this?

use ALT+PrintScrn to copy screen to clipboard. When it is in the
clipboard, start an image viewer (such as Microsoft Photo Editor) or image
editor (such as Photo Shop) and paste the image (CTRL+V).

Paint Shop Pro (www.paintshoppro.com) has a nifty screen cap built in, also a ver good total imaging package.

On mine you don't need to press 'alt' first.

Its too easy...just press 'print screen' button...go to mspaint as installed with windows, click edit, click paste, then save as .BMP or what ever file type you like.
