Question Domains

Does anyone know where one can register (free) a domain web address??, or, if not free, the cheapest place to register a domain.

Thumbs up

No problem.

Go to www.freenetname.co.uk and sign-up with their normal ISP. EVERYTHING is FREE except the calls. Been with them now for over five months. Wonderful service.

After you have signed-up you can then get a FREE domain name. It will be available for upload in less than 24hrs.

One word of warning guys,

with most of these 'free' registration deals, you need to read the small print about who actually OWNS the name. I looked at a couple of these and found that since the ISP owned the name, if I wanted for example to move to a different hosting operation - like to get a different deal - I needed host who could support ColdFusion, then the bill was going to be scary to buy back 'my' domain name. They were registering the name under their own title with Nominet and would only sell it to me at their price.

Just something to be aware of and may not even be relevant for your needs.

Stay well clear of a .co.uk
They are a pain in the ar*e to move if you want to use it on a U.S server.
.coms are the default with Netscape.
ie; just enter the name [yourname]
if it was a uk reg'd name you would have to enter http://www.yourname.co.uk

I see if you're clever about coining a domain name you could make a few bob for yourself. They can be registered for as little as £50 & people have been engaging in 'cybersquatting', i.e. they register domain names with a view to reselling them. People from my part of the world have been offered £40,000-£45,000 but for ethical reasons or because they believed they could get more declined to sell.
People are also buying up 'cuckoo names'i.e. registering celebrity Website names & auctioning them off to the highest bidder.

To register just enter 'domain' into a search engine, you will be given hundreds of sites. There you can check to see if the name you have chosen is already taken. If you enter one that has not been chosen you have the option of registering it. You enter a number where you can be reached so that companies who wish to purchase the domain from you can make contact. Many sites exist for speculators who wish to buy or sell names. There are 100's in categories like technology, consumer goods & entertainment. It is not open to minors & anyone wanting to sell a domain must ensure that they are permitted by law.

For a company keep the name as close as possoble to the actual name.

SIERRA,
you're talking my language now.
Just stay well clear of famous names, stick to generic ones ....... with no trademarks involved.

Just found this site:
http://www.namezero.com/

offers a free .com registration and portal service.

This article has a bit more info than Icould work out from the website.
http://www.cnn.com/TECH/computing/99...com/index.html

Worth a look.

(I hope..)

[EDIT]

I have successfully registered 2 domains with this mob, but there are a few gotchyas.

1. THEY not you own the registration, they just let you use it for free.

2. They dont host any content (ie your .html files have to be hosted elsewhere) You can link the deafult page for your domain to another url and this works ok, but there is advertising on the bottom of the page.

3. If you dont use the servive for 360 days they can/will remove your domain.

4. I dont know of the cost to 'buy back' your domain if you want to keep it for yourself.

5. Their website is a bit confusing and can be tricky to se up. It kept getting confused about which site I was in.

I would recommend it for anyone who wants a domain of the style MyFirstNameLastname.com etc
