Its no worse than watching TV as long as you have the correct brightness etc.
But goes without saying get eye tests every 6 months.
I have worked in IT for 20 years with no problems (well except when I discovered the porn sites , lol)

If your monitor refresh rate is set to anything less than 75 hz then you're liable to get some eye strain because the brain can detect the 'flickering' below this setting. That why if you look at an old TV screen (50Hz) closely you can see a very noticeable flicker, modern widescreen TVs usually have a 100Hz refresh rate which is why their picture looks so much better.

What usually knackers your eyes is the close up fixed focal length from you to the computer screen when you are sitting there for so long. The usual advice is to take a break for 10 minutes in every 1-2 hrs.
At worst, find something in the distance behind the monitor to look at every so often, forcing your eyes to re focus on it and exercising the eye muscles.

Right click on the desk top select properties on then clicl the advanced tab at the bottom then click on adapter in their will be the refresh rate, it may actually read optimal rather than 75hz or whatever the actual refresh rate is. If you set the refresh rate too high you will damage the monitor, read the specs of the monitor to ensure you don't over do it.

Also if you've got a decent monitor it'll have a menu button on it that'll display the actual refresh rate.
