OE 6 or OUTLOOK ?
OK Chaps,. . I've managed to blag a copy of MS Office 2000 from work. I really only needed Excell 2000 (to read the shift rosta properly), but decided to install it all anyway. Is there any advantage of using Outlook instead of Outlook Express 6 for my e-mail ? If Outlook doesn't have any different/better features then i won't bother, as I am not having any problems (That I know of), with OE 6. As always, your advice is much appreciated

you naughty boy!!!!. .. .Outlook has plenty of features, it is part of the whole Office package. OE 6 will nly be used as the newsreader.. .. .Outlook has a calendar built in, you can organize your private and business life, you can make it remeber you for all the birthdays etc of the people in your address book, which in turn let's you manage too many details.... .There is a task manager, there is a notepad...and if you really have a lot of time to spare, you can print everything to just put it in your Filofax (only thing required is a puncher....). .. .Word will take addresses from Outlook and you can easily print the envelopes for your daily mass-mailings to all friends.... .. .To have everything set the way it can be done (which may not really be that what you want) you should have a look at some 300+ pages available in printed form @ Amazon or your local bookstore.. .. .Office is a very complex program and there are actually courses available, up to 14 days, to cover most aspects.. .. .To read only Exel files, there is a little (and legal) program available from Microsoft which will let you just do that, in fact, a similar prog is also for Word available.

Similar position here, I blagged a copy of Office and have installed all the programmes.. .. .However I can't get outlook to check for mail on anything other than my default account.. .. .I have three, the default is BTinternet one, the other two are both hotmail.. .. .Anyone got an idea what I've done wrong. All three accounts are listed in the accounts bit and bt is set to default.. .. .Gash. (by name and nature when it comes to this stuff, bet you wouldn't believe I did three years of a computer systems degree <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> )

I was curious about your problem with hotmail, I tried it and managed to get all the messages from my hotmail account ok.. .Granted I let the wizard prompt me for the info that it needed to set up the account, but no hassles.. .Where do you seem to be having a problem? whats it doing / not doing?. .One thing to check is the BT account I assume will be a POP account the Hotmail should be HTTP.. . . . <small>[ 12 March 2002, 09:05: Message edited by: SLF 999 ]</small>

I spent a bit of time comparing, and I don't think that Outlook is worth the bother for most people. The online diary isn't a patch on my little one printed on paper. Doesn't even need batteries.. .. .So it's OE6 for me.

Gash, go to TOOLS and than ACCOUNTS and highlight the account you want to have checked. Click on PRPERTIES and in the new window check the box at the bottom.. .If this does not help, than double check all details for this account, there may be the requirement to add the @whatever.com to your login name.. .Next, there is the chance that you need a secure password authentication or that your server requires authentication..check this with your provider and see the SERVER tab to enable the features if required (alternatively, you may have marked them and this is not required...). .. .In the CONNECTION tab fields you should also enable the appropriate field. If you dial-in via a different provider, use 3rd party dialer.... .. .If you are using a firewall or a virus-checker, than there is a very good chance that they may have altered your server settings or account settings...

Outlook .... <gag .... yuk>. .. .OE6 - Good Program, none of the extrainious crap that makes Outlook crash or fail all the time.. .. .Outlook is not worth it's code.

Outlook is not worth the hassle for most people unless you're talking to an Exchange Server, at which point, in many shops, the shared calendar is the killer app.. .. .For people who just want POP/SMTP email and newgroup access, and don't have an Exchange Server to talk to, Outlook Express is almost always more convenient.

Can you use http mail (hotmail) with Outlook 2000? I've tried setting it up, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to enter the http line only pop/smtp.. .. .Another curious thing is that I have two machines. One is my company laptop which runs Win89 and my own which runs WinME. I installed the exact same office 2000 software on both machines. In Outlook on the 98 machine, it seems quite normal. Like clicking on TOOLS, ACCOUNTS, etc. However on my ME machine when you click on TOOLS, you get a SERVICES tab instead and have to set up your email accounts that way. It then calls it "remote internet mail" and is slightly different and not as user friendly.. .. .Also on my 98 machine, my address books are synchronised with OE6 (if i want them to be). They are not on my ME one, and is a real pain!

ECAM, the hotmail account via Outlook works only in the Outlook Express...which is the newsreader of Outlook.. .And that is the trick you can use, in Outlook go to VIEW and GO TO and select News, this opens the newsreader (actually Outlook Express). On the top you will see the Hotmail account once you have set it up properly... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />
