Question Old Toshiba Laptop prob.....

Hi All!. .. .I recently acquired an old Toshiba satellite Pro 430CDS Laptop. It has worked fine for a week or so.. .. .However, yesterday, on boot up, it asked me if I wanted to change the bios. I had not asked for this and was puzzled. To cut a long story short, I discovered that it was the keyboard that is faulty. Think it is sending false key inputs to motherboard. If I bootup with the keyboard lose out of the computer (but still connected) it works OK. I have to plug my desktop Keyboard in at the back, and the pointing device still works.. .I have never seen this problem. Have any of you out there in PPRuNe land ever had this prob, and if so, what did you do to solve it?. .. .It's going OK, but I can't use it as a portable computer! Toshiba no longer make this machine, so they don't provide spare parts. The only place I have found to get replacement keyboards is in the USA - keyboards are $80 - about £40 over here!!. .. .Any help much appreciated!!!!!

sounds to me like the flat cable has a problem...double check that it is proper seated and not only sitting on the edge as this happens sometimes...

Thanks for that FL310.. .. .Tried that - it will now boot up OK with the keyboard seated, but the Keyboard is still producing the wrong character for a particular keystroke. . .. .Therefore, I think the keyboard is knackered.

Try Control Panel/keyboard/hardware and see what type of keyboard driver is installed. You should be able to change it (you may need a Windows CD); it sounds like you have e.g. a US keyboard driver but a UK keyboard or some such.

Swashplate. .. .One of the selling points to me is that Toshiba have an excellent online support forum. You could try searching and asking the same question(s). They are very good, and prompt too. There's a wealth of info to be had in there - and hope it helps.. . . . [ 08 March 2002, 09:33: Message edited by: Squiddley ]
