Tisscalli woes

Is that how you spell it? Anyway, it only works when it wants to.

I'm getting the gist that people are routinely losing their signal at odd times. My dear friends here in Clacton are without service 40-50% of the time.

Is this usual? I've been into the system time and time again, and all seems to be working. But I then get Try Again.

Is there a very quick test I can do to check the Router to Provider integrity?

I had these problems with Tiscali, notably when I was younger playing Operation Flashpoint online, kept getting booted off the server!

Try opening your run command (windows key + R), typing 'cmd', then 'ping www.google.com' or 'ping 66.249.91.99'.

If it says a reply was found it shows you are connected.

Eg.

c: \>ping www.Google.com

Pinging www.Google.com [66.249.91.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.249.91.99: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=239
Reply from 66.249.91.99: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=239
Reply from 66.249.91.99: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=239
Reply from 66.249.91.99: bytes=32 time=19ms TTL=239

Ping statistics for 66.249.91.99:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 22ms, Average = 19ms

I've been getting increasing problems with their DNS service since our local exchange was "upgraded" i.e. LLU. I suddenly find that no web pages will load, but if I type in the numerical address then it's fine. Of course the Tiscali (correct spelling!) status indicator usually says everything is hunky dory, but that's about par for the course.
Maybe that's why their attempts to sell the U.K. business have stalled......

I'm not suprised, they are absolute b@st@rds. Cancelled my contract with them and before we knew it there was a letter from debt colleciton on the door for £100! Fair enough, we obviously missed something in the contract. Over a year later, just received another letter from the debt collection agency demanding another £57. A sharp reply was returned and we haven't heard since.

Tried ping and got an average time of 37

One will try when next it kicks me off.

The laptop shows varying speeds on its local connection. 24 mbps typical.

On the office PC, it shows 100 until it fails.

I know little of this subject, but have decided to get up to speed on it. Have to be when I get back to my Texas office though.
