internet libel
I have recently become the victim of what I am told by a lawyer is 'libel per se '. I have been personally libelled on a public website. I have regrettably been informed that it is not possible to trace the sender.
Any Ppruners have any ideas/contacts that I could use to bring some justice into this world ? or indeed any similar tales of woe to compare notes ?

Where was the site situated?
Was it a bulletin board?
Was the bulletin board moderated?
Did you complain to the site owner(s)?
If yes, did the site owner take action to remove offensive material asap?
If you want general advice you must be a little more specific.
There have in the past been many threads that have discussed libel.
You can also try a search with Google

As I understand it, you should be able to target your legal action at the owner of the website as it is their responsibility to moderate content and they are the ones displaying the libellous information. It is then up to them to counter-sue the offending member of the discussion forum, for whom they should have contact details from the initial registration (more fool them if they didn't).
It is worth noting that the legal system is dependant on the location of the hosting server, i.e., if the server is hosted in the US, then US law applies.
Your first task would be to run a "whois" query on the offending website address to discover the registered owner of that domain.

Mr BS, as we are mostly technical in this Forum, you may not reach all those who might be able to help. Lawyers frequently contribute to the more general Forums at the top of the page.
As stated, this has been discussed regularly in PPRuNe and it's one of Danny's main concerns when discussion gets too heated and people are named.
I would suggest you repeat your question in the "Questions" forum and e-mail Danny personally. Although he won't answer your question in detail, he may be able to give you a steer in the right direction.

will provide you with a good general overview of internet libel law and recent cases.
This seems as appropriate a section to ask questions on internet activities as any.
Lawyers go anywhere where there might be the chance of work!! Even Jet Blast

slj, No-one has said that this is an inappropriate place to ask a question about internet libel. Only that there are other places where the question could also be posed. If you wish us to believe you are a lawyer, then more rigorous attention to the meaning of the written word would be appropriate!

Just to make it clear.
My point was and is that this forum is as appropriate as any for a question seeking guidance on where to find something about law on the internet.
It does not mean better or worse than other forums in PPRuNE.
It will be interesting if the original poster re posts in Questions and the reaction.

I found a useful programme at;
<a href="http://www.neoworx.com/" target="_blank">http://www.neoworx.com/</a>
It's called Ntx39.exe and it shows you the URL of all the links. May be of use in tracing the offender.
