Unhappy WinXP - No Dial Tone after upgrade.

Anyone come across this problem please? Just completed an upgrade with Dell supplied software, including new drivers etc. All working well before upgrade but after, everything worked except no dial tone when I try to connect, (56K V90 data/fax modem).
One hour with MS help. Two hours with Dell help, tried just about everything and checked and unchecked every box, created new connections, tried Hyperterminal, don't think anything was missed, even did a reinstall of the OS.
If anyone has any ideas it will be much appreciated. Thanks.
(I have trawled the other XP thread and links but to no avail).

I'm no expert, but I've just reinstalled XP from 98SE. As predicted, this wiped my USB external modem, although my connection automatically defaulted to the internal one I have. No dial tone, to me, may mean you'll have to configure your modem to accept the change. Depends to if you're running an external modem? This is what happened in my case. I use a laptop.

suggest you de-install the modem from XP..than shutdown the PC and (if you have an internal modem, remove it physically as well) restart. Now the machine is without any modem.
If you have a USB modem you can plug it in now and XP will detect a new hardware device and will install the drivers.
If you have an internal modem, shutdown the PC again and install the modem physically. Start the PC and XP will install the new hardware.

This is also a problem with W2000 sometimes...

Good luck

Thumbs up

Thanks Mango3 and FL310. As my desk top, (Internal modem, by the way), is still very new I have on-site help from Dell arriving with a new modem to-morrow so, in one way or another, suggested fixes will be done by Dell!!!
