Can anyone help...
I am running an AMD Athlon 1.4GHz, with 512mb P133 ram, Win98SE...
Have just tried to install another 512mb to bring it upto 1024mb but now windows won't start - it just keeps shutting down and rebooting into safe mode.
In safe mode it shows no conflicts, have tried reinstalling windows to no effect. Both ram modules work OK alone and I have tried changing them around in the slots to no effect.
Is the problem with windows or the motherboard?

The problem is probably to do with combined RAM stability. Normally it requires a setting change within the BIOS. Which O.S are you using? Also, have a read of the motherboard manual (if it's available) just to check if there are any memory limitations.

The motherboard will accept this amount of memory.
Assumed that windows98 was the OS?...
Tried resetting the bios to defaults and optimised defaults but again to no avail...

When I had a similar problem a year ago (upgrading from 256 to 512Mb) the only solution was to try out different brands of RAM, and after the 3rd attempt it finally worked for me. Which brand of RAM are you using? Is it the unbranded local dealer type or Kingston/Crucial?

Go into the BIOS and mess around with the CAS settings (I cannot tell you where this setting is as it varies from motherboard to motherboard). Try changing these from 3T to 5T, and 5T to 7T. You can also try increasing / decreasing the memory speed bus from 133 to 100MHz or underclock the CPU to see if that helps (it usually does). I must say I've never heard of HQ, if the above doesn't work you will have to invest in Crucial RAM. Crucial design their memory for specific motherboards.

Sorry! I think you will try for ever on this one.
It is a known problem with Win98. (512mb the max)
See the MS Knowledge Base to find out more, but sadly, I think you will find you simply have too much memory. <img src="frown.gif" border="0">
