IE6/ unwanted internet connection...HELP!
I use Windows98SE and have recently reformatted my drive. I also upgraded to IE6. For some reason each time I restart my pc the modem dials up (but IE does not open, even when the dial up connection is complete). How do I stop this? How do I find out what is initiating the connectuion?

Go into IE.
Tools
Internet Options
Connections
You will see 3 options,
"Never dial a connection"
"Dial wherever a network connection is not present"
"Always dial my default connection"
I'm guessing the pip is in "Always dial my default connection" - change this to Never Dial a Connection.

Not the issue, that only tells IE what to do.
You have an app in start up, or in the registry that is trying to dail out when you boot up.
Check your start up folder, then run sysconfig and look at the start up options for an app that may be doing it.

I'll give you another 'possibility'.
Do you run Real Player? If you do it is most likely that. If not then it will be something along the lines above.
Real Player is a small icon on your status bar called Start Center. It is controlled to dial-up EVERYTIME you boot! It then gathers more information about you?????????
If you really need Real Player, uninstall the one you have, then get the free "basic" one from www.Real.com but whatever you do do NOT check any boxes otherwise you will have dial-up included again and load of crap mail too. But, beware, just below where you uncheck the checked boxes - there are ANOTHER four, they are very craftily hidden. You need to uncheck them too.
Actually it is a bit of an evil prog this one and is under question in the US.

This is really starting to **** me off. The worst thing is I have had this problem before but I can't remember what sorted the problem out. The only programs in my Startup folder are the MS works calender reminder and MS office.
My computer doesnt appear to have a sysconfig! Ive tried to locate it using
Find files... but it isnt there.
I un installed Real player just to be sure it wasnt the culprit - makes no difference.
Ive tried using my firewall to try and identify what is ringing out or what runs when the connection is made... no help.
Could it be something to do with reinstalling BT internet software?
Anyway I appreciate the replies, I will keep at it. Thanks.

What Firewall software is it? I'm thinking if we changed the rules to disallow/refer all Internet connect requests it would tell us something....

As mentioned above, the command to run at the command line is: 'MSCONFIG'
Go into the startup tab and see what you have ticked.
Another thing it could be is Windows update trying to connect to check for updates.

I recently posted about a similar problem and wondered why I couldn't find autoexec.bat. Some kind soul told me about msconfig, and I eventually located the problem there. It was trial and error but I found the program that was causing the problem. My modem didn't connect until the boot process was almost completed so I had a rough idea of where to look, and I eventually un-ticked a program called loadqm.exe and lo and behold the problem disappeared.
Perhaps now somebody can tell me what qm.exe or even loadqm.exe is for that matter? A search failed to turn up its existence, but whatever it was I can't say I've noticed any difference for its absence.
RealPlayer is also a DEFINITE suspect, as are some the reincarnations of Napster.

Using msconfig has not helped - when I go into autoexec batt I see a column of boxes which can be ticked or not as desired, but most of the boxes have no text beside them to identify the programme concerned.
Using the firewall admin functions I can see a list of programmes permitted to access thwe net - however all of them are normal items like IE, outlook express, windows update, all of which I want to be able to use. (Before reformatting etc I had no problems with any of these trying to connect without me asking).
I have a vague recollection of this being something to do with BT internet software reinstallation when it happened before.
