Post Freeserve

UK users help please.
Time has forced me to shortly replace my current computer system.
The introduction of new OSs from both Apple and Microsoft actually make it a good time to do so as stability seems to be within our grasp.
I am tempted by Apple products but have been there before and felt very lonely.
I am sure I will end by going for a fairly leading edge PC, based on the last four years or so which involved both an Apple and a Packard Bell computer.
What I want to know is how do you folks get on with Freeserve.
If you buy off the high street you are most likely to have it deeply embedded in your software.
I presently have an account with AOL and am very happy with it. It does everything I want it to. If there are better options available let me know.
I happen to have both AOL and Freeserve installed although, since the introduction of the all inclusive tariff, I have only used AOL. They are quite agressive and Freeserve keeps rearing its head even when not required.
When I get my new system I don't want that hassle so what do you guys think?
Opinions please on AOL, Freeserve and anyone else like NTL and the practicality of broadband.

Mallard:

Can you get ADSl where you live?
How often do you connect to the Internet?
How much do you (don't you) want to pay for connectivity?
Do you want to run your own web server?
Is being able to connect upon every request to the Internet important?

Buttons?
