Post Modem Slowing Down

I've recently noticed that my modem connect speed is often much slower than before. Always used to get 45,333bps, regular as clockwork. Then, just sometimes, 44,000bps. When it started showing 42k, I still wasn't unduly concerned. Now I sometimes see 34k, and have had a 'one-off' worst case of 21,600bps. I do still occasionally see the higher speeds, 44k if I'm lucky.

Can anyone please suggest what is the most likely cause? Thanks in advance.

Question

This depends on ISP.

I would guess that the ISP you're dialing into is either over subscribed or the modem nest you dial into needs a re-boot. Of course the quality of your line could be suspect.

Suggestion: Call ISP and ask for an alternative number.

Hi Buttons, and thanks for your reply.

Please could you explain how to re-boot the 'modem nest'.

Something your ISP has to do.

I would try calling them and ask fr an alternative number. What's the ISP by the way?

ISP is OneTel. Seems to be little difference, speed wise, between their FRIACO and PAYG dial up numbers.

Tried a quick experiment with several different ISP 0845 numbers last night, and got 44000bps every time! (Including OneTel). Same speed this morning. Fingers crossed

Modem is quite new, so will hang fire for now. Thanks for your help guys
