How do I undo this?
I have been trying to open a file that a friend sent me as an attachment. when it said which program would you like to use to open this file i started to work my way down the list. After several unsuccessful attempts ( when i HADremembered to un-check the box) I forgot to un-check the box that says 'always use this program to open this type of file'. Does anybody know how I can get back to or undo this mistake. everytime i try to open the file it tries to do it with Acrobat reader 5.0 which is un-suitable. BTW I think that the fact that the box always checks as a default is bloody annoying. The file I'm trying to open ends with jpg+.sit

If all you want to do is change the application that opens when you double-click a document icon, just hold down Shift as you right-click the document and then choose Open With (in Windows 95, 98, and 98 SE). In Windows 2000, you may need to choose Open With, Choose Program (see the previous tip). Then you either select an application from the list, or click Other to browse for the right one. Now click Open. In the Open With dialog box, be sure to check Always use this program to open this type of file and click OK.

The file I'm trying to open ends with jpg+.sit
A .sit file is a Mac archive (compressed) file. The only program which can read it is Stuffit. But if I read your post correctly and the attachment ends in jpg.sit then do not open it. Dual extensions almost always indicate a virus. Email your friend to verify that it did indeed come from him/her and if you still need to look at, save it to a diskette first and scan it.

Stuffit work on all platforms, WIN, MAC, LINUX etc. so it is not necessarily a MAC file.
Also Stuffit preserves files names so the;
.xxx.sit
does not imply a virus, this is quite a normal option for Stuffit behaviour.

Phew ! cheers chaps you've starred again. I downloaded a program (freeware) called stuffit expander 6.0, from www.download.com Everything is sorted now thank you all. I sometimes think that the tech.expertise on this forum is sometimes better than the manufactures tech support. i suppose it has a lot to do with enthusiastic volunteers helping friends as aposed to people who do it for a living clockwatching until home-time. well thats just my opinion. thanks again.

Thanks Icarus, it's been many years since I used a Mac, so I don't see .xxx.xxx type filenames very often.
Of course the virus w*nkers have discovered that if you pad the name with spaces before the second dot, it looks like a single extension to the unwary.
