Hi,. .Just bought one of these laptops and everything works fine except the modem. When you try to dial out, it disconnects before even dialling and says the modem is not connected. When you try a hyper terminal dial up it dials put OK and connects, but no host name comes back. It is on port 3, but the device manager can't fint a port 3. Under modem properties it is installed to port 3. Diagnostics shows all kinds of data, so it is communicating.. .I looked on the web and someone was berating this particular model, and saying that it has a 'winmodem'. I'm not sure what that means. It is called HAMR56 or Smartriser56.. .Can this be resolved, and if not, can an external modem be connected?. .Please help.. .Thanks <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

As I understand it a winmodem is one which uses your computers processor and memory rather than a normal modem which has everything it needs built in. It'll just slow the machine down a bit.. .Port 3 will be a virtual port allocated to the built in modem.. .It sounds as though something is conflicting with the modem. If you have an external modem that you can try it might be worth a go. Without teaching you to suck eggs dont forget to change the modem over in the dial up networking connection
