Keyboard/mouse freeze up

Well. Tried a new mouse. That cured the problem for a few hours then started again. Tried deleting and reinstalling IE 5.0, sounds like 5.5 might be just as bad.
My keyboard and mouse have different leads so can only go into specfic sockets, but I have checked this and tried the mouse with an adapter in another socket. Same probs. Also looked for conflicts but none found. Did a scan disk and quite a few problems came up, again, cured it for a while but its back!
Driving me mad! Works for varying amounts of time.
Could be something overheating, my fan/ computer have been making some odd noises, like surging fan or something.
Any other ideas?

GF - had something like this tho' not as nuisansical. BOAC Captain's story also sounds faintly familiar. Also problems with McAfee's "Scan on Demand" not working properly. Also annoying non-fatal exceptions.
Cured by uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee. If you don't get a clean ininstall (I seemed to but did a [tedious] manual check anyway) you may have to do a manual uninstall.
Instructions (complicated) for doing a manual uninstall of McAfee emailed to you directly. I had quite a time prying this out of McAfee and it is not for the fainthearted.

I have seen this problem with several computers and each time have identified the cause as being hardware related. Here are some of the things I have done to fix the problem.
1. Computer would run all day but crash under FS2000. Solution, install additional fan in the case to keep graphic card operating at cooler temps. These cards will get hot depending on the demand softwares demand.
2. AGP card was not seated correctly. Card would run fine nearly all day giving no hint of a problem, and then freeze with only the mouse pointer moving on the screen.
3. AGP card had the fan facing a hot PCI card with little space between the PCI card and the AGP card such that the AGP fan was struggling to keep the card cool. Moved the PCI card to another slot and the problem went immediately.
4. The computer would run fine all day and then give up for no reason. Have solved this problem by only running a single memory bank, or moving the bank to another slot. Most time, the problem is when failing memory is under high demand it just gives up. Replacing the memory can solve the problem.

I too have had the same problem, and for 2 known reasons, both different occassions....
First, the Hard Drive was overheating, this was happening regardless of when, where, or how long I was on the computer for....it was exactly how clownfish describes it.
and
Second time was when we installed anifra-red optical mouse...the computer played up with fatal exceptions, froz, unfroze, and generally didwhatever the hell it wanted to the entire time the mouse was installed...You can imagine our embarrasment when, after having taken it to be repaired for the 3rd time with no joy and finding out it was a blasted conflict of the mouse software, and my hard drive
Don't know if either of these are your problem, but it just goes to show how many really silly and seemingly inconsequential things can effect the running of your PC.
Good luck with it!!
