A Web-SiteDirectory of Web-Sites?

A naive question perhaps. I appreciate that there are at least 10,000,000 URLs in use but was wondering if anyone ran a dirctory, possibly by subject, of web-sites?

Yahoo is one search engine that is categorised, as well as having a free search. I think lycos is too. Try these... :
