SpeedJeans:

I spent ages looking back through the past posts yesterday to get exactly the same thing.

Here's a link to the download page for Zone Alarm:

http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/partn.../download.html

Just click on the top one of the three to get the free version.

While you are at it SJ go to www.grc.com - there you will find a guy called Gibson who will test your pooter. ONE of the things he will do is close a port that Zone Alarm does not do. That is the one that ICQ's and hackers get in through.

Just go with the flow. He is one hell of a nice guy and very very reliable.

Question

G'day from Dunnunda, IFR,

I'm a fan of the GRC site, but somehow I have missed that reported vulnerability in Zone Alarm. I've reviewed GRC's pages, but can't find a reference to Zone Alarm leaving a port open, which worries me a little!

Could you refresh me please - which port and what is the fix, or better still, could you perhaps provide a link to the relevant GRC page.

Thanks in advance

Your Antipodean AA

Have used Zone Alarm for a few weeks now and an v. happy with it. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to convert an I.P address to an understandable web address? Have tried NeoTrace and Visual Route.
Thank you.

Red face

I can't find the problem with Zone Alarm, the only thing I can think of ref GRC is his program doesn't test all 65,532 port addresses. But from what I can gather, if your P.C. is cloaked, they won't be able to get in anyway. As in they have to crash the open port at the correct address which is almost impossible ???

Any thoughts Ausatco ???

Just looked at his site again. Ran Shields Up and Probe My Ports, Leak tested also, no problems. Do like the sound of this Nano Probe product he is developing, just wish I new what the hell he was talking about!!!!!

I came to much the same conclusions as yourself, Diablo, but, though I'm interested, my tech knowledge is limited so I'm not as confident about my system security as I'd like to be.

I re-ran the same tests and came up clean as a whistle, but if InFinRetirement has found a security hole I'd sure like to know about it.

GRC promises further development on a couple of products - one is the Nanoprobe technology and from that I think there will be a proggy that quickly tests all 65,532 ports. Also an improved Optout (advertisement spyware detector) is supposed to be on the way. While waiting for the Optout development, you might like to try AdAware from Lavasoft at www.lavasoft.de .

Cheers

AA
