Daft DDR question

My son has just upgraded his PC and we now have 2 512mb DDR2 memory sticks going spare. My PC (a getting older dell dimension) has room for more memory,(already has 2 x 512 Mb DDR) but according to my son the MOBO will not support DDR2 Ram,
Does that mean it wont recognise it at all, or will it recognise it but only run it at the same speed to match the DDR memory, or will it just blow my MOBO if I try to fit it.......... any suggestions accepted, and I wont hold you responsible If I do blow the motherboard!!

It won't physically fit, since the key notch is in a different place. Also, DDR has 184 pins, while DDR2 has 240 pins.
