Jeppesen FlitePro or Rant 2000
I already have FS2000 but I do not think it is very good for IFR practice.
Has anyone used either of the above or have any advice please.
I would like to have a panel with HSI and RBI also if possible something that it sinilar to fly compared to a Duchess or Seneca.
Thank guys

Rant 2000 isn't a flight sim as such, more a procedural trainer. You can't use a joystick with it. You can see or evn download a demo at www.oddsoft.co.uk I think. Jeppesen Flightpro is very good as a simulator although to get the best from it you need a console which is big money, it works without one though. Have a look on the Jeppesen website for some more info. The one I'm using only has single engine aircraft though, you may be able to get others but I'm not sure. Have you had a look at Fly!?Much the same as FS2000 with Kingair etc. but you might like it. Don't know the website offhand but it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I used both RANT 2000 and Flitepro for my IR training and I found them a great help. The big bonus is it gives you something to practice on for free.
Both require some time to get familiar and as it has already been said, RANT is not a joystick flown programme. However, RANT has the great advantage that you can fly a proceedure perfectly and then print it out. For example, all the RANT turns are exactly rate 1 so you can see what the instruments should show if you flew perfectly. I found this a great help when trying to sort out holds with strong crosswinds.
Both RANT and Flitepro have HSI/RMI but the aircraft choice is limited to only two with Flitepro, a Bonanza A36 and a C172. You are therefore stuck with these.
I managed to burn all the checks into my brain by repeated flights using Flitepro and this may just have staved off bankruptcy which I nearly encountered at the end of my IR.
In many ways RANT version 3 was easier to use because it came with an instruction manual. RANT 2000 doesn't have a manual so there is no logical sequence to guide your learning. In my opinion it is a bit of a con to sell something for this price without an instruction manual.
One final note, Rant is the only programme I know that simulates dip on the ADF. It is slightly unrealistic in that it snaps back quickly at the end of the bank, but its still useful when you are trying to sort out what is going wrong on your NDB approaches.
Like all programmes, you have to spend time to find the best out of them.

Thanx guys....
I have downloaded both demo's and had a look at them. The Rant appears very good for procedural stuff and although the FlitePro has a nice panel it does not seem as sophisticated (can't spell at this time in morning!) as FS2000.
I have always thought of FS2000 as a game but the more I look at it the more impressive it appears.
I will probably buy Rant.

I got flitepro for Xmas. Haven't spent much time on it. Looks good. Has potential. Struggling with a joystick (can't hold her straight and level - too sensitive). I am going to buy CH yoke and pedals at end of month which I hope will help. Its great for me as I am learning to fly in a C172 for my JAA PPL.
If you buy Flitepro, I recommend purchasing simcharts for your area.

ACARS, Before you spend lots of money on a yoke and pedals you might try to borrow a yoke from someone, or at least get one on sale or return. I have never used a yoke on Flitepro myself, but I know people who have spent a lot of money on them to try and reduce the sensitivity and then found it is just the same as with a joystick.
Changing the joystick sensitivity in the set up routines is a better (cheaper=better) bet in my view.
I also question the cost-effectiveness of rudder pedals on these sims. Your money is probably better spent on an extra flying lesson.
There are various internet newsgroups for flight sims, and re-curring moans from people who can't get rudder pedals to work correctly with computer flight sims.
Just suggesting a bit of caution in the hope it may save you some money and disappointment.

Just to keep you posted.....I bought RANT2000.
Yes it does lack a manual but I am happy with it.
I also bought FLY! just to play with but it won't work with DirectX 8 (bugger!)
Cheers

Don't forget to download the patches and Florida etc, software for free from their website
http://www.oddsoft.com
there are a few extra features available.
I have found that although it doesn't have a manual once you get stuck in and use the help it all comes good. Get the Nav fit set up for your aircraft and start details for your home field. Gets quite addictive, flying routes with the aircraft hidden then playing back and making sure you went where you hoped!
I've been flying RANT for a year so if you have any snags do shout.
