Anti Virus Programme
As a computer illiterate, good eh?!! I'd appreciate any words of wisdom on what to use as an anti virus software on my home PC.
Was hit by Navidad recently so it's about time to spend some money, but not too much!!

You want the free downloads, and go to Inoculate Personal Edition. They also have free updates as well.
Cai bought out Vet antivirus. I use Cai and I have no complaints. Most importantly, it doesn't crash my computer unlike other av software I know!

I've been using Norton AntiVirus in its last two versions and it has performed faultlessly. On line updates every couple of weeks included in purchase price and it has saved me from virii several times.
Try www.jungle.com their prices are pretty good, just a word of warning dont be persuaded to buy other Norton Stuff such as Clean Sweep or System Works as I installed these and had all sorts of probs.
Also if you're going on line get a free firewall to protect from hackers. www.zonelabs.com have a free version of Zonealarm which is v good. If you're not sure about needing a firewall try www.grc.com and test your computer security.

After almost losing my HD by these days , I finally bought a anti-virus. Norton was my choice , and has been working fine for me (consider that I have an old P100Mhz with 32Mb 
). Did not crash my system ,and saved me already from some attacks. I bought the version that comes with AD-Block and Firewall/Security. That is where it let a bit down. I run my ZoneAlarm togheter and sometimes , ZA get's what Norton (Firewall) should get...but do not. Aside from that , no regret.Is money well spent.

I use one called PC-Cillin. It is great. It has found viruses and it quarantines them or deletes them according to your own wishes.
It comes from www.trend.com you get 30 days free trial but you can go way over. I bought it though, about £26 I think, and they are brilliant at letting you know of new viruses. It also works very well with Zone Alarm. Some don't like each other!

I too have been using PC-Cillin, in fact I have been an avid user since version 2.0 and the latest is PC-Cillin 2000 (ver 7.0). It is a very clean and intuitive interface, easy to use and quite quick. It has updates available almost weekly and they are free.
In the last 2 days PC-Cillin has intercepted 3 seperate email worms sent to me by various family members (crazy folks with no anti-virus protection) and via one of the email lists my wife belongs to. That in itself is worth the small purchase price.
Trend (the makers of PC-Cillin also offer an online scanner to check out your system you can find it at http://www.antivirus.com/free_tools/
Don't be an ostrich an think it can't happen to you cos clean up is a real pain in the a**. The worm that is circulating now is called TROJ_MTX.A it works just like the others including the infamous "I LOVE YOU" virus in that it corrupts your winsock.dll file and intercepts any outgoing email and sends a copy of itself along with an attachment under various labels such as the following:
When an infected user sends an email to an address, the Trojan sends another email to the same address with itself as an attachment. The attachment is also a Trojan copy infected with the virus PE_MTX.A and its filename is randomly selected from the following:

PC-Cillin and Zone Alarm are compatible!?! What great news! I have used the HouseCall free tool at Trend Micro for over a year, with great success on occasion. Irene Ching has mailed me many times, always promptly, courteously, and with wonderful help, and attached files to clean a problem if necessary!
I have many Norton Items [including the new Systems Works Pro which is very nice to keep things trim, IMHO --Win Doc found over 90 errors in Windows one time, and generally 20 to 50 on a fresh load up!]..
However, in light of the new GRC program Leak Test, and the ratings of Zone Alarm ..[best!].. I may change protection tactics.
