Help with Search
OK I must be an idiot, I can't seem to use the search function on this site. No matter what I type in the seach field I get thousands of hits, nothing specific. Please don't tell me to do a search to figure this one out...
What am I doing wrong?

I doubt you're doing anything wrong.
When you search, everything on the page is read, including the ads. If the search word or phrase you entered is found, it shows-up in the results.
Try using the advanced search facility - I find searching on titles only, rather than the default Entire Posts, cuts down on a lot of the chaff.
