Vista and AVG free

Cannot load a copy of AVG Free into a new Vista computer. It says it is not compatible and not running on 32 bits or something.
I hate to have to pay (shock horror) for virus protection.
Does anyone have a workaround or a suggestion of a suitable alternative (even if I have to pay?)

I can assure you that AVG works absolutely fine with Vista. Not sure about the latest version 8.0

I've been running it (v 7.5) from day one of a new Vista laptop as of last year.

Try this link;

IIRC before I binned Vista in favour of XP Avast worked fine and has a free version, link below;

64bit or 32 bit vista?
Sometimes the AV vendors have a separate 64bit version (if they have it at all) worth checking.

AVG Free Anti-Virus Supported Platforms - note that AV free is still v7.5.

OK, appears that the 64/32 bit shouldn't be a factor.
Avast Home is a very suitable alternative. (I use it on XP, it's been pretty much flawless.)

If you get no joy with AVG then think about giving Avast a try.

I have it on one of my laptops here and it is alright. Free as well.

Managed to get Avast, but it was not free (initially free but chargeable after 60 days). Persevered with AVG and after six attempts it loaded and is now running. Thanks for all the help.

When I tried to load AVG free on 64 bit vista ultimate some months ago it would not load.

I've now loaded 32 bit Vista ultimate and AVG free loads without any issue.
