IE6 randomly crashing?

I'm running IE6 on XP Home and it keeps randomly stopping. Little egg timer appears and, when you try to close it, the 'Program is not responding' window comes up. Clicking on the 'End now' button has no effect although you can still minimise the window. After this happens, you cannot access the Control Panel and everything slows to a crawl. Restarting at the plug seems to do the trick, but it's irritating.

Any ideas? (be gentle with me, I'm only an ATCO)

Have you done any housekeeping lately? Might be a need for one of the registry checkers to do its stuff, plus a defrag, then see if things have improved.

Won't do any harm in any event.

Try downloading CCleaner, this will harmlessly remove all of the junk.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

I had a similar issue with IE6, I had downloaded the Windows Live version of MSN messenger, the program gave me fits until I downloaded IE7.
Mozilla Firefox is a much better browser than IE6 any day of the week

Few months ago I was having problems with IE6 "Explorer has to close" etc etc. Ran my Spyware Doctor (don't bother with it too much, takes ages to load) and it found a nasty. Works fine now.
