Finally my employer has confirmed that Vista is a load of crxp and agreed to go back to XP until issues are resolved. Anyone else had an IT department steam on with Vista, only to go back?

Nope, mine's been taking their time with it. I tried their beta build on my notebook: they'd turned off a lot of the annoying stuff, including all the hand-holding stuff, and I have admin rights.
Works pretty well, but in a business environment, the OS is there to serve up the applications, and not to get in the way, so I kinda have to ask "why?" My employer (for just 2 weeks longer) is a major PC maker and Microsoft global partner, so they're obliged to support what Microsoft puts out, but I think they're also asking "why?"

We had a long, hard look at Vista and decided against it (rather like the Chinese for the forthcoming Olympics). The exam question we asked ourselves was "what does Vista do, that we need to do - that XP doesn't?". The answer was nothing. We will take another look when it is a little more mature, probably a few months after release of SP1. Why invest in a new OS when the current one meets the requirement? If it ain't broke - why fix it?

New OS' are Microsoft's primary revenue stream, so this is Microsoft's nightmare - that people will say "XP is good enough" and not buy Vista. XP is very stable for me, on a 5-year-old laptop, and there are drivers for everything.
No wonder they're looking at pay-per-use on a lot of things, e.g. Microsoft Office.

My place gearing up it's support for it as my organisation supports schools. Some of those schools will need to move to it over the next year or so due the M$ licensing schemes their on. I'm off on technician training for Vista in October. There is much about Vista that is the same as XP and much that is not in a full windows Active Directory & Domain Controller set up.
The new server versionof Vista Server 2008 is currently in Beta testing http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/default.mspx
So all the fun and games begin again. And most of us have only just got Server 2003 R2 bedded in well and humming!

Well I'm a happy chappie tonight. New laptop with XP and it all works. Engineer mentioned that Dell are going back to offering XP due to user demand, anyone confirm?

You can have either. Vista seems ok per se but it seems a lot of changes under the skin have left third party vendors playing catch up. Seems ATI, Nvidia & Creative amongst others have all had problems with drivers.

Have a friend delivered with a new Dell today, still had Windows Vista on it seems the salesmen push this quite a bit.
No Microsoft Office either, even the virus program was a 30 day trial which I guess is normal now days.
Sorted the missing office program quite quickly, AVG will take care of the Norton issue.
Had a recovery disk which I think works off the partitioned hard drive using up to 9 GB of space.
Whatever happened to the days where we would get the Disk with the operating system on it instead of this recovery thing.
No wonder Dell can sell them so cheap.
Still a good deal at 449. USD to include a 19 inch LCD monitor.
After transferring some files and music to it from a backup external hard drive, think I will stay with XP.

If you get a new computer with Vista, make sure you keep your old one with XP as a lot of stuff is not yet compatable eg. need XP to update the operating system on my mobile phone.
If you have Vista check carefully before buying any hardware, my choice of an all in one Printer/Scanner/Fax was limited.
XP is much more stable and I have found no real advantage with Vista so far, had quite a few Ctrl/Alt/Dels. Maybe my 1gig RAM isn't enough
