0800 Reverse Scam

This is new to me: phone call at 0052 woke me inviting me to "say 'Yes' to accept the call". My telephone provider is investigating and it appears the company concerned is '0800Reverse'. More here - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...d.html?t=55367

Beware! Whether it is a good idea to email them with your number and ask to be 'blocked' I'm not sure. Waiting for response from my phone company.

press 1 to accept the call
And which button to "F**k Off"???

These things make me mad! And of course the "regulator" is toothless as usual.

After a quick e-mail to [email protected]

I wrote:
I choose not to receive 0800 Reverse services as defined in section 4 ‘Range Of Services’ and request that you block my number (XXXXX XXXXXX) from receiving such calls.

Please acknowledge receipt hereof.

Regards

etc

They replied: (In approximately 10 mins)

Thank you for your enquiry.

As requested a block (5 years) on the 0800 Reverse charge service has been issued against your telephone number.

Regards,

Customer Service

0800 Reverse (Operations) Limited

I took the chance to give them my number as I copied the email to contact @ ofcom.org.uk, so if it all goes Pete Tong, Ofcom are aware of the date of barring request.

Having cooled down a little I realise it was unfair to call it a scam. Should have said 'rip off'.

I think this is the service which my 14 year old son uses to get me to call him back on his mobile. He spends all his money on bits for his bike and refuses to put even a quid on his phone, and makes reverse charge phone calls instead. I have now stopped accepting these. I didn't realise they cost that much to receive - what a ripoff.

They have a long list of numbers to bar.

If you have placed a block on the reverse charge service, can the person trying to call still get a message through to you, telling you who is calling?

Many years ago, when you called the operator and told them you wanted to call XXXXX and reverse the charges, the op then called the number and asked if you were willing to accept the call.

AFAIK the operator service still works and at a far more reasonable rate.

I'm sure the operator-assisted "normal" one still works fine.

Folks who need to call me have "call me free" cards, with a funny number to dial, which will get them straight through.
