Phone socket? You sure you're not on dial up?
Don't take the AOL person's word for it straight away. Before messing around with the phone socket, move the computer nearer to it, and try it without the extension. If you don't get an improvement you then know that wasn't the problem.
AFAIK moving of sockets etc usually should be carried out by qualified personnel, eg a sparky or someone from the phone company, if you do it yourself and something goes wrong, you might end up with a heavy bill.
Rules vary between countries/phone providers, so ask them.

As Markjoy says, that is AOL's standard response which is probably high on the cue cards for the help line. Follow Markjoy's advice and plug the modem in with the supplied connection line rather than the extension move the computer if necessary. Then if you still get 2mb tell AOL.

Do not forget that the (presumably) "up to 8mb" is a maximum and you are not guaranteed that - it depends on many things including how many others are using your b/band from the exchange and your distance from same. I am on "1mb" and never get more than .8mb

If you are only getting 2 megs then you either have not been upgraded to 8 megs at the exchange, you live a long way from it, or you line is crap.

I've got a 12 meter extension on my system from the master skt to the computer and download quite happily @ 7.5 megs from a good site.

Make sure you have the extension cable plugged directly into the master skt (if you have a phone there use a splitter and an ADSL micro filter for the phone and then another micro filter for the computer)

Also try running a speed test, just google it and choose one (bt is a good one) it will tell you what the speed of the line is set to at the exchange as well as what you can actually get.

You are not allowed to move the BT socket. As previously suggested, try running your computer directly from the BT point and see if the speed increases (but do several checks during the day including one late at night where contention is less likely to be an issue). If speed is better, consider going for a wireless router.

You want to move your phone line to get 8mb? I wouldn't bother! I'd upgrade!

Then again...it's better than 2mb I suppose.

I think with BT you're gonna have to phone them up - because it might effect other things - I doubt anybody would be able to tell you what to do, because your hook up depends on a number of factors - and unless you've worked with wiring before, get an engineer - you might be able to get a non-BT engineer and save some money...that said, it's kinda their fault that you're getting 2mb instead of 8, so they should be obliged to do it.

Then again, are you using 8mb to start with? With newer systems, the object is to use as little memory as possible, so it might only require 2mb to do what you need to do - you might not need 8mb.

Again, it depends on a range of things, so hiring an engineer is your best bet.

As someone who works in this field (check my profile). With the 8meg and above ADSL connections there is a 10 day 'testing' phase were the line speed goes up & down while BT finds the speed that is 'stable' for your connection. The speed will be dependent on distance from the exchange and the quality of the cable between you and the exchange. If push comes to shove you can ask BT to switch the cable run for you. It sometimes improves matters (can go the other way too). Also with ADSL their can be cross talk at critical points on the path between the exchange and your house. These can be VERY hard to track down and takes time and persistence by you and your ISP to do so.
Also shop brought phone extensions are nearly always bad news with ADSL as the quality of the cable is nearly always crap, and the cheaper the (extension the worse it gets. There fine for voice use but not for ADSL. If the BT socket is too far from your PC either get the socket moved closer to where you need it, or buy an ADSL router and run Cat5 cable to PC. A side benefit of ASL Routers is you get NAT (Network Address Translation) which acts as a very basic firewall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network...ss_translation) and allows you to have a much more sophisticated network later on should want/need it.
HECTIC PM if you need help getting the ADSL sorted, as it can take time and expertise...!

As others have stated, the possible causes are many. Ensure the basic setup is correct before you do anything that may compound the problem.

1. Get your line stats.

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/adsl_line_stats.php

has instructions on how to obtain line stats for most routers and modems.

2. Run the BT speed tester at

http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

to find your BRAS profile (I titter ye not - Google it).

Your line stats will indicate the maximum speed your line will support. Look for the sync rate. 8128 is good. Something lower may not be all bad news, but you will not get 8Meg.

Your BRAS profile indicates the maximum rate the exchange thinks your line will support. This may be stuck at 2Meg. If so, ask your ISP to have it reset.
