Reducing size of a MIDI file
On http://www.helipost.com/audio/ there is a MIDI file of a turbine starting up.
Want it as a ringtone, but it's bigger than 64k.
I'm a MIDI numpty - how can I reduce it ? I've tried MidiSqueezer / MidiCutter but they complain the file is broken

That file's mpga, not MIDI. It appears to be identical to the mp3 file. I'm guessing your MIDI tools have noticed it's not MIDI.

when I open the link I get this option:The mp3 plays as an mp3 with no problems to reduce it open it with a mp3 editing programme (just google and download one of the many free programmes available) and reduce the sample rate until it's the required size.

You could try downloading the mp3 file and converting it at a lower sampling rate using one of the trial version of software from here

Basically, audio -> MIDI conversion is not an easy or simple process, because a standard MIDI file is not a sound, it's a sequence of instructions to another sound-generating device, like a synthesizer or the sound chip in your phone. So I think you're outta luck with these files.
You can get quite creative with MIDI, but it's a lot of work, and how good it sounds is limited by the hardware. e.g. the "piano" in some phones is a Longway from a Steinway.
