sound problems!

Hello all,

A question on behalf of my girlfriend.

She recently bought a HP Pavillion DV6130 and has some problems when listening to online radio stations.

Whenever she wants to listen to an online radio station she cant get any music out of the machine.

However some of the radio stations site feature commercials on them. If you hover your cursor over the adverts than you hear the advert. When she hovers with her cursor over these advert they work so its probably not a problem with the soundcard. DVD's, CD-ROM,s etc. work normally with sound. Even YouTube works with sound.

Does anybody have a clue whats going on here? We compared internet settings but to no avail. They are all the same as my laptop (HP DV6174) and mine works normally.

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

CEJM

When you say that you have compared Internet settings, how deep have you gone ?

I am thinking you may have different MTU sizes which can upset streaming audio and video. MTU is the maximum data packet size sent via your home network before the ISP begins to fragment it.

You may even have different ISPs ?

It may therefore, be worth downloading a copy of TCPOptimiser and looking at some of those settings.

LL34,

You have lost me completely. We only compared the basic settings because i am a novice with computer technology.

So if you please could explain your first post that would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

CEJM

P.S i dont know if it helps. But it doesn't matter what kind of internet connection she uses. I my house we have got wireless (ADSL) but where she lives she has internet via the cable. Streaming video is no problem but she will have no sound with it.

There are 4 different streaming protocols, all requiring different players:

AAC, aacPlus and Ogg Vorbis Formats
Streaming mp3/mp3PRO (SHOUTcast/Icecast)
Windows Media Player
RealPlayer

Make sure that you have the player associated with the format installed and configured correctly, or try with an alternative stream protocol.

It could be something as trivial as the sound turned down / off for a particular format, or a format associated with the wrong / not default player.

There's a good website here: http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/ for radio stations available to the UK.
