There is also a splitter device that recognises a specific phone number and will route that call to what ever you plug into it, ie set it up with your mobile number and when you dial home it would route it to a pc or modem etc all other calls go to the answer phone or whatever. You need to have caller ID enabled for it to work.

This thread brings back a few memories!

Figure of Merit, I'm on an 02 contract phone, now using 6600, very similar to your 6500. I've just retested my old tiscali dial-up from my laptop using bluetooth and it still works fine. What are your network mode settings on the phone? I changed mine to GSM.

certain VPN tunneling protocols do not work through it
Bit of an annoyance that, but nothing that can't be solved with a quick "ssh -D" into a remote server (such as your own home computer if you have ADSL). Same for the SMTP issue.

Some good suggestions. Thanks.

BladePilot- I'll try getting the phone unlocked and see if that helps. I'll try the o2 sim card in an old unlocked phone first to check that the SIM is happy to work with any phone. This should detect whether I'm risking souring my (frankly already thoroughly curdled) relationship with o2.

sooty- Thanks for the suggestion but I think I've tried that. It's what I was trying to explain in para 4 of my original post (21 May)

JofM5/GreenGranite- That's a cool way of getting to the internet, but is it really any different from the "geographic number solution" as suggested by sooty and already tried by me? I'm not convinced that the phone would still let data go out over the bluetooth. Might be worth the investment if all else fails. (Though if it gets that bad I'll ring the office and get them to read out the NOTAMs and Wx!)

Sh3113y- Changed it to "GSM". Still no joy.

I'll let you all know how the unlocking thing goes. Thanks again

Phil

I suppose it depends how much you want to pay, and how much you want to use it.

I have an O2 "SIM only" contract, for which I pay a shade under £20 a month. That gives me 600 minutes any-time voice, unlimited SMS, and unlimited GPRS/3G data - subject to a "reasonable use" limitation.

If I'm connected via HSDPA, the speed is OK. On cooking GPRS, it's a bit slow.

I didn't have to do any APRS or other setup stuff - just put the SIM in the phone and switch on. I can connect the laptop to it via Bluetooth, or wired to a USB port - USB seems a fair bit quicker.

The phone has an "internet sharing" facility which needs to be turned on, and that's it.

Friends have 3G dongles for their laptops: those seem to be a fair bit faster (impressively so) but they pay for the speed.

For those occasions I'm away from WiFi and home, and in the UK, the cellphone tether is very useful. Just don't use it abroad!

This should be pretty simple, I just ran through this on a generic WM6 device and a Nokia 6233 handset which is a series 40 handset just like your 6500 Classic.

On your 6500 Classic you need to define the GPRS/WCDMA Access Point that is used when you make a Bluetooth Dial UP Networking (DUN) connection from your iPAQ.

To define the settings for connections from your iPAQ or Laptop:

1. Select Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Packet data > Packet data settings > Active access point, and activate the access point you want to use.
2. Select Edit active access pt., enter a name to change the access point settings, and select OK.
3. Select Packet data acc. pt., enter the access point name (APN) to establish a connection to a network, and select OK.
4. Establish an Internet connection by using your Nokia device as a modem.

For O2 I believe the GPRS/WCDMA Access Point Name is Internet (mobile.o2.co.uk)

Then on your iPAQ you would define a new ISP connection:

1. Settings > Connections > Connections > (My ISP) Add a new modem connection
2. Enter a name for connection, Select a modem: Bluetooth, Choose Next.
3. If you've already paired your 6500 Classic with the iPAQ then choose the 6500 from the device list and choose Next [ or choose "Add new device..." and pair your your 6500 Classic, and choose "Dialup Networking" as the service to use from the device, choose Finish, then Next ]
4. Enter *99# as the number to dial to establish the connection, choose Next.
5. Enter mobileweb and password, as the username and password respectively, leave Domain empty - You may have to check these settings as I don't currently have a 02 account only Vodafone & 3
6. Choose Finish

If all is working as expected you should now be able to connect to internet from your iPAQ via your Nokia 6500 Classic (Your Phone will prompt to allow the iPAQ to connect unless you have authorized the device to connect automatically Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Bluetooth > Paired Devices select your iPAQ > options>>Auto-conn., no conf. now select yes.)

Hopefully that should be all you need to access the internet from your iPAQ via your carriers GPRS/WCDMA network.

HTH

Michael
