Home UNIX based Mail server

Does anyone have experience of running a UNIX based Mail server at home, with multiple XP clients?

We now have 2 XP PCs at home, one upstairs and one downstairs, and I also have an UBUNTU file server connected via a LAN which is part wired, part wireless.

Between myself, MrsRC, a couple of kids and a charity that we help to manange we have 9 eMail accounts on the go! They currently all come in and out of one of the XP clients running Outlook Express.

What I'd like to do is configure a Mail server on the UBUNTU server to manage the 9 eMail accounts, then point Thunderbird or similar at it from the 2 XP PCs so that we can manage eMail from either PC (ie incoming mail can be read on either PC, mail sent from one PC is visible in the "sent mail" folder from the other).

Is anyone else doing this already and able to offer advice on which eMail server / how best to configure? I've managed to get so far with Exim and Courier, but am happy to admit that I'm finding it a bit of an uphill struggle!
