Nero is not free but it can be purchased very cheaply on eBay.

Very definitely not free, but Roxio 8 Pro has a feature that allows one to determine how hard the error correction is working when a CD/DVD is read. This might be useful for determining when archive disks need copying, thus starting again in the deterioration process.

I understand that this feature is only part of the Pro version and that some CD/DVD drives do not provide the hooks for the feature to work.

Just a thought.
