Vonage -Any takers?
After a miserable time with Sipgate, but one untroubled by phone calls, I have decamped to Vonage. Any users with any thoughts? Yes, I know - I should have checked here first, but I was put off by the apparent honesty of the drone at the other end of the phone.

What were your troubles with Sipgate? Sounds severe. I'd been thinking of using Sipgate as a dedicated line for the kids. I signed up with them (but paid no money ) and reserved the first number on the local list (01*** 818000) - so I though a summer project would be to get it up and running.
I don't think that SIP numbers are transferrable between carriers, are they?

Not checked that one out yet AA. The Sipgate fun was largely down to some arcane incompatibility, possibly in the router. I have spent many, many hours trying to charm it into life and after a few calls, it just doesn't want to know any more. The tech support, is very good actually, but I think I just have one of those setups that is going to keep stirring the grey matter for ever and a day. By moving to Vonage, I get a hassle free 30 day money back g'tee and so will either get it working straight away, or bin it, should the difficulties continue.
Result is that I have a dedicated £60 Sipgate phone, if anyone wants one, so get in touch!

Ecce Homo! Loquitur...
I use Vonage, had no problems since the day I installed it 2 years ago. Works perfectly. I have a DECT digital handset plugged into it and a fax. Its in my apartment in Madrid with a Colchester number, you get to pick the area you want and get unlimited free calls to all UK and Eire numbers.

I believe this particular handset (Bt100/101?) is locked to Sipgate, although I be their support team would be able to unlock it. Pity about the problem, as the sound quality on Sipgate is excellent.
Thanks for the input Orac. It does seem a useful and from what I can see, a reliable service.

Well, it is in! Setup was a doddle and am now live. Sound quality is excellent, bandwidth usage is low and coupled to a standard cordless DECT phone, gives great freedom. The web based dashboard provides all info on calls, plus email voicemails, etc.etc. Early days, but so far, I would go 100% on it.
