Skype blocking in Europe

Has anyone else been having problems with Skype in European hotels?

I'm connected using the cable in the room but everytime I start Skype I get kicked off the network after a few seconds.

I spoke to the front desk who thought the server might be blocking Skype in the rooms, in the hope people would use the vastly expensive room phones (yeah right).

I did manage to use it in the Business centre through the wireless connection, which uses a different server from the rooms though it has the range of an asthmatic hamster and won't reach the rooms

Any thoughts?

Try call back services instead to get around this. If you have access to a DIRECT line or mobile with free incoming calls the costs are very similar to Skype. Idea is you call the service, the phone rings and then cuts out so no charge. Using caller ID to identify you they call you back, ask you to enter the number you want to call and connect you.

Calls can also be set up via internet or SMS. Try http://www.call2.com and http://www.jajah.com Jajah more restrictive about the numbers you can call from, but good rates and suitable for home use or a mobile during domestic travels. Call2 has slightly higher rates but much less restrictive ie from any country to any country.

We'll it may be a false alarm, I updated to the latest build of Skype and it seems to be working today.
