problems with adobe

I'm having trouble opening .pdf files on my computer. I used to be able to open them no problem. I've tried uninstalling Adobe reader and reinstalling it several times with no success. I've even tried the older versions of Adobe and it still doesn't work. Does anyone out there have any ideas or have you ever heard of this happening to anyone? I've used adobe a lot in the past on this computer and others and never had any troubles.

Are you double-clicking on the file to get Adobe to start up and to open it, or are you using Adobe to try to open the file?
