Where have my ports gone
I was aware of loosing my internal wifi, and then I noticed the moden had gone, then device manager showed all ports, including printer port vanished.
No software added, no changes, just vanished ports.
Any ideas, as to how to recover, windows XP SP2 running on a lap top, (2 years old maxm).
Please help, I am lost without my ports.

Have seen a case where the machine had shut down a load of ports to save battery power, and for some reason, they didn't get started correctly next time.
We think it was related to the user often using hibernate instead of a full power off, on restart, it wasn't checking the ports the same way, and didn't bring them back up again.
Might be worth checking device manager and setting them to not be switched off to save power, then do a complete shut down, wait a few seconds, then a power up again.
In device manager, check the "view" option to see if you have the "show hidden devices" option, if not, do a search for the setting procedure, then go back to device manager. It's possible that some ports have been changed, and are now conflicting, so not enabled correctly. If they are "hidden", then one possible solution is to boot into safe mode, delete all the ports that are problematic, and then do a cold boot.
Is your motherboard battey OK. Another possible is that the battery is getting weak, and the board config in BIOS has been corrupted, which could be confusing windows.
All long shots, but it's going to be something obscure like this.
