Vista is supposed to ship by the end of the year! However, depending on which review you read, there are either serious flaws with the beta and lots of bits missing or the reviewer is blown away by the new features making it look likely that MS will ship Q4.
If it is anyway like Win2K, once to beta 2, the builds will start to roll out of Redmond on a fairly regular basis. For instance, build 2128 of 2k (beta) was stable enough for me to run it for 4 months (Back when I was at Uni and had only one machine to do all my coursework on, although it did dual boot).
Friends who upgraded to build 2131 got screwed as MS were playing with the multitasking bits and it made 2k unusable. That was fixed around 214x. Final build was 2195.
So once it starts, most people will probably be able to get a fairly stable build to play with before upgrading.
Therefore, I'm holding off buying for now... Gonna get a new Intel DuoCore with Vista and a nice big TFT.. Ummmm!

Shuttlebus
