ATI/Asus conflict

ATI/Asus conflict
I really Hope someone has come across this before!
Specs:
Win Xp Prof Sp2
ASUS A7V8X-MX SE motherboard
ATI All-In-Wonder 9600XT multimidia card (AGP) 128mb
512MB DDR Ram
I tried installing my ATI card today and when i went to boot up, the BIOS beeped 4 times one long 3 short. When I looked at my monitor it was black and the power led light was flashing as though in "sleep" mode. I unplugged it and it had the standard "no signal" image on the screen. I then proceeded to plug it into my on board graphics and again the same thing occured (black).After removing my new card and then pluging in my monitor again...everything was fine! I read the troubleshooting for the ATI card and it stated that you may need to disable the on board graphics...is this possible? I also checked the ASUS manual and it did not have anything regarding disabling the on board graphics, however it did state that the beeps mean that it cannot recognize a graphics card, or that the memory is bad. I really hope that there is a better fix to this than taking it back and trying another one!

First thing to try will be a look in the BIOS to tell it to use the AGP card first instead of the PCI card. ( if it's the same as the board I have here.) It should be in the integrated peripherals section.
There may also be an option to disable the on board chip in the peripheral section.
Another thing to watch is that you may need to tell it to update it's settings in the Plug & Play section, so that the motherboard tells Windows about the new configuration.
Not sure on that mobo, you might have to do some changing of the memory size allocated to the on board chip, in some cases, it conflicts with the AGP graphics card, which can lead to the beep issue.
A long time ago, ATI cards and a sound card used to conflict for an IRQ, but I think that one has now been sorted out and is no longer an issue.
another possibility will be to power down, remove the ATI, reboot but get into the machine in safe mode, delete all the graphics adaptors and monitors before power down. Put the ATI back in, power up and let Windows sort itself out from there.
