Outlook Express No Longer Working

Help..!

After updating Norton AV, I can no longer send or receive email. I can access the net ok.

I had a similar problem a few months ago, and am pretty sure I got the solution from here. But, as search is temp unavailable, I can't find the answer.

Any assistance is very welcome....pls!

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Update:

I have now discovered that Nortons Firewall was the cause of the problem. I don't know why though.!

However, have disabled Norton FW and enabled Windows Firewall - and viola!

Is it me or is Norton becoming less user friendly. I'm beginning to consider some of the free options available rather than paying to go through this hassle which is time consuming.

Sounds like you have made the discovery I did, some years ago - anything Symantec/Norton is going to cause problems.

Happily using ZoneAlarm + Avast at no cost and no hassle.

I'm with Frostbite on this one. Though, if you've got XP firewall working, it will probably do everything that you need done. (Even though it is fashionable to be rude about Microsoft).

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Had the same problem with Outlook. Drove me mad!!!!

ISP was not helpfull at all.

Now i have to disable the NAV firewall before checking my email.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this ?

please don't say "get rid of NAV" my company requires me to have it installed.

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

You don't say what version Of NAV you're running but Norton AntiVirus is just that - it scans for viruses (later versions do trojans, spyware etc as well). There is NO firewall with NAV but if you mean Norton Internet Security (or some other package with a firewall) then you should configure the firewall to allow access to Outlook Express. I expect it has blocked the program due to your install and is not in Auto configure.

The XP Firewall is generally regarded as a very poor utility and has nothing like the fire power of Norton. Like a lot of things on the computer some of these programs can be quite demanding - personally I'd get better acquainted with how Norton works and use it. Just my 5p's worth.

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Correct..! It is of course N Internet Security, hence the firewall.

I have been using it for a couple of years at this stage and am reasonably acquainted with it. It has been allowing me to send & receive email quite happily - until a couple of days ago.

It updated itself, and now refuses to allow me to check for potential socialising duties .

OE is listed in its permitted progs for internet access. I haven't changed anything at all - its down to the recent update which has snarled the process and taken it upon itself to restrict my communications.

Symantec don't seem to offer any help on their site for XP SP2 with OE and this problem. And I'm not going to pay their tech support to resolve a problem that they have created

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Had the same problem after the latest update. Went into norton security, firewall, configure and selected programs. Went to change the rules for outlook from automatic to always permit - the whole thing froze and had to reboot, but when I did it worked fine thereafter (outlook is still set at automatic so I don't know what I did but it now works)

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Thanks Background noise.

I'm running Norton internet security 2005 and I even went to the Symantec website and did a "health Check" on the program. It found a problem with "live update", Even after fixing that and doing what you suggested I still have the same problem.

If I disable the firewall before checking my mail everything works fine????

PS i'm running outlook 2003 with service pack two. Norton says it should have SP3 but if I go to microsoft update it says I have the latest version.

All my software is licensed.

Background Noise

After having the same problem as others here I done exactly the same as you a couple of days ago and hey presto it worked. The system freeze was a bit scary as not even Ctrl+Alt+Del would restart, only the On/Off button worked but hey ho.

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

What about me..??

I tried the suggestions, but the pc didn't freeze. And whatsmore, I still have the same problem...

Still using Windows firewall, but I have paid for the Norton one - what are my chances of a partial refund...

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

My neighbour has just buttonholed me tonight to ask if I can help and guess what? Sounds like exactly the same problems reported here with Norton IS/OE6. Will have a look tomorrow night and report back if anything found.

Norton the bane of every IT techie’s life...should be burnt lol

Once on a job with an IT consultant in London, described Norton to me as, "Norton pay IBM to have it pre-installed, our customer pays us to take it off again!"

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Re my earlier post, have just seen the neighbours' machine and after running a live update on Norton, everything miraculously worked. UNable to ascertain whether it was the A/V or Firewall side of things, but hey ho...

Re: Outlook Express No Longer Working

Ah Conan, you were going to be my answer..!

Fancy popping round to have a nose at my machine....

Have gone back into Norton and tried again to set "permit". This time the pc froze.. High hopes I thought - obviously too high - Nortons Firewall still doesn't like allowing me to send / receive email.

But, Windoze is happily looking after the firewall, so I'll live with it until next update.
