Video problem

Yet another cry for help!
My machine has recently stopped playing video clips and displays the message "An application error has occurred"!
This bit of Redmond-speak is as useful as an ashtray on a motor bike!
Can anyone suggest possible solutions (I've already reloaded Windows Media Player) or useful remedial dodges, please?
TIA

It might be well worth getting something like RealPlayer on there and letting it do the work instead of WiMP. Free as well, so a cost effective solution, methinks
