THIS Link gives a reasonable explanation.

I recently bought a DVD recorder that will playback any format apart from DVD-RAM. The manual says it will only record on DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, but I've discovered that it will record equally well on DVD-R discs!

I recommend the www.videohelp.com website for information as to formats, hacks, how-to articles etc.

The last lot of DVD-Rs that I bought are multi format - they work in DVD+ or DVD- re-writer drives. They work in my PC and in my DVD recorder which takes most of hassle out of the format/compatibility issue.
