Apple Ipod

I have purchased an Ipod around 4 months ago to plug into my headset which works very well. The only problem i have with it is that to download music onto the Ipod from my computer, i have to leave these files on my computer which with 1500 songs or so, the computers memory is quite taken up. If i erase some after putting on the Ipod, then when updating the Ipod later on, these CD's will also be erased from the Ipod. I wonder if there is a setting on Itunes that alows me to erase tracks from my computer but not from the ipod. Any help here would be much appreciated

Hi.
Havnt got my pod with me today, but off the top of my head:
In itunes, under -EDIT, then -PREFERENCES, then the tab titled-IPOD (You must have your ipod hooked up to enable this tab).
There should be various selectable options on the left hand side.
One is Automatic updates (default) another is manual update.

Select MANUAL. This will stop itunes from adding or deleting music from your ipod. You can go ahead and delete music from your computer without any probs.
However... If you ever select Automatic again and have your ipod hooked up, it will delete your music.
On manual update: To add music from itunes to your ipod, you will need to drag the music from your itunes library to the ipod library.

CI300 is right, you need to manually update. However, once the tracks are deleted from the Library on the Computer, they are gone for good. If you want to put the tracks back, you will have to re-import them from the original source. I'm not sure whether it's the same on the PC, but on the Mac, before you delete a track, iTunes lets you put in the Trash first, making it at least retrievable until you empty the Trash.

The problem with deleting tracks from the Library is that if the iPod crashes and has to be restored (ie. wiped and reset) by Software Updater, you won't have the tracks on your computer to put back onto your iPod.

I don't use an Ipod, but surely you can archive all that stuff to a DVDROM? Or buy a large hard drive (they are cheap these days) and keep everything on that?

Yep, you can back up your music collection to CD-R or DVD-R from iTunes. Just set the burning preferences to data disc and burn the entire library. Itunes will just keep asking for new discs as they fill up.
