MSN Messenge 7.5
On account of young one heading to university. I have just introduced this to my computor. The trouble is it opens without my request.
From desktop I left click for internet [ google home page] or e mail.
Then when either of those have been closed MSN opens.
How do I set up so that it is only instigated or terminated at my command?

Go into Tools -> Options, then choose the Preferences tab.
Untick "Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts" and "Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background" - this should do the trick.

Another way is start/run/msconfig. Go then to start programs tab, find msmsgs and anything relating to messenger (you can usually tell) and deselect it from your startup programs. Msconfig is a very useful tool - if you find the pc is taking ages to boot up here's one place to thin out the applications that are running in the background......
Enjoy!
