Tesco net - Error 550

My sister brought her laptop over this evening; she connects to the Tesco.net dial up service and uses Outlook Express and everything has been working fine for months.

But since Friday, when she tries to send eMails to any address other than another Tesco.net address she gets Error 550 - cannot relay eMail to xyz.

I spent an hour or so going through her settings, and nothing appears to have changed - she's still dialling Tesco.net on the 0845 number that we set up months ago - she's still logging in as [email protected] - POP and SMTP are both set to mail.tesco.net - etc.

Tried temporarily disabling firewall and antivirus - no difference.

Tried deleting the Mail Account in Outlook Express and setting it back up from scratch - no difference.

Tried sending eMail from the web client - all works fine.

Called Tesco.net £extortionate/min (from her mobile ) and the chappie, obviously reading from a CRM system that he didn't really understand, went through 50% of what I'd tried already then started repeating them, but with a "Are you sure that..." prefix to each!

But then he said "I would try resetting your account on our UNIX system, but it's down - call back tomorrow".

So ... any ideas anyone? Can you think of something else that I should have tried? What likelihood that this issue is in some way related to the Tesco UNIX system being down?

Maybe they've switched on SMTP authentication ?

i.e. where you need to log-on to your SMTP server in order to be able to send outgoing messages.

Can't think of anything else. Don't think it's an account-specific issue on their server, it's more likely to be their server mail program (Exim or whatever they use) if it's not the above.
