MS Office slow file access

I'm sure I've screwed up a setting somewhere, but...

If I'm in any of the MS Office products, and click on "save", then want to change to a different folder or hard drive, every step of the process to get to the new folder takes about ten to fifteen seconds.

In Word, click on "File", "Save As", and then the black triangle alongside "Save In" and the box blanks and everything freezes.

Eventually, the whole drive/folder tree appears. Clicking on any drive works, but trying to select a folder on that drive starts the fifteen second queue again, and so on.

This happens ONLY with MS Office. All other software that I use has no problem at all, and I can skate around the drives and folders instantaneously.

What have I done wrong? Or what has Mr Gates done wrong?

Zoink, Sounds like it may improve things for me too - but I can't see how to do it?
