Save Picture as

When I right click on images with Internet Explorer and "save picture as", the file type always defaults to Bitmap.(.bmp).

Is there any way of changing the default file type ?

Try here: Click

Following those instructions has always resolved the problem for me.
If it doesn't work, there are two more here

Good Luck.

I'm coming at it from a different angle. It doesn't solve your problem, and you may already know this, but once the picture is saved say, on the desktop, you can open Paint and save it as a JPEG from there.

When you right click to save, it opens a window. On the bottom there are two drop-down menus. One is file name. The second is save as type-when you click the save as type drop down, it should offer you options, JPG, BMP, etc. Does it offer these options for you?

This has happened to me a while ago too.

Download Crap Cleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
and dump all IE and Windows temporary files.

CCleaner works like a charm, but be careful of exactly what you delete.

You can do all of this from the command line if you're familiar with CL usage.

have now tried all of the above suggestions, including crapcleaner - still no joy.

The drop down menu on "save picture as" gives .bmp as the only option.

Guess I'll just have to convert bmp's into jpegs manually
