another wireless thread

Hi,

My girlfriend has been given a wi-fi laptop by her work and were looking into getting broadband in her flat. Our local service supplies the modem with connection so what bit do I need to set up the wireless network?
A quick look at the electrical shops shows me all sorts of routers, ethernet bridges, access points - some of these gadgets even have modems built in and god knows what else. As you've probably guessed by now i'm a complete simpleton and a bit baffled by it all.
Can anyone shed light on the gizmo I need or prehaps recommend one?

I use a D-Link 614. It just plugs into the back of our modem outlet. It's been sitting happily broadcasting away for about 18 months with no problems at all. You'll need to plug into it at first, to set it up, but it's pretty easy to do.

We've got 2 laptops, a Tower and a wireless printer all working off it and these devices work anywhere in the house.

Dunno about prices and I don't know what the rules on pprune are about mentioning suppliers but the place I got ours from has something to do with fingerprints...

Cheers,
TOO

Thanks for the quick replies.

So it's a "Router" that i'm looking for then. As i'm only an instructor i'm looking at the budget side of things, would this do the trick?

If the broadband is fed to your girlfriend's flat by cable, then yes, a wireless router is what you need. If the broadband is via a conventional BT line, then I suggest a wireless ADSL modem/router, such as the Netgear DG834G.
