Win98 locks up with new CyberDrive burner

G'day PPRuNers

I've Googled myself stupid but can't get the answer. Thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any pointers.... either debugging tips or suggestions for sites like majorgeeks etc.

Our old machine is Win 98 IBM Aptiva, and I've just installed a burner. It's a CyberDrive CB115D Combo and it replaced the CD drive the machine came with.

The machine boots with the new burner and Windows can see it. It's on the second IDE cable master plug and the burner's jumpers are set on master. I've tried all the various combinations of plugs and jumpers. Power gets to the burner OK, and I can even get it to open its tray by right clicking in Win explorer.

However ... if I ask it to read a disc (eg the CDs supplied with the burner) the entire machine freezes. No way out but to reboot, and ctl-alt-del won't cut it - it has to be a power off shutdown. If I take it out and put the old CD ROM drive in everything is back to normal.

Any tips appreciated. TIA.
