Angry What's the point of virus scan if this happens?

If nothing else, this should raise a smile at my computick ignorance:

I've managed to instal McAfee virus scan, a huge achievement in itself. I religiously run scans at regular intervals. However, most of the nasties it produces are labelled "Write Protected" and I can neither clean, delete nor quarantine them.

The McAfee "helpline" is completely impenetrable. And none of my computer-savvy chums can help either.

Is there anything I can do about this? Am I just being incredibly dim, or is there a real problem here?

Aren't all the sickos who create these oh-so-funny viruses going to Write-Protect them?

Help!

Cool

What has it detected and where?

One that gets a few people is written into a restore point, although it gets detected you can't access the restore point, the only thing to do is switch off system restore, reboot and then start with a new restore point.

Thanks Spanners. How do I find out where the problem is, though? Next time I run a scan, I'll have a look at the Doom and Gloom summary it comes up with at the end. Maybe you, or someone, can decode it...

Hi Catswhisker,

Please download 'Hijack This!' from here, unzip, and place it in it’s own folder, (not in the temp folder, or on the desktop) doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan". When the scan is finished, click "Save Log", and copy and paste it in a reply. (Disable smilies in the reply)

This will give me a rundown of what’s going on in your PC. Don’t fix anything yourself yet, as a lot of the stuff on that list will be harmless or required.

Cheers

Liam

catswhisker,

One of the reason's it could show write protected is because the file is currently in use.

Do run HJT! as Liam mentioned, and lets see what is going on with your comp.

Take Care,

Richard
