XP Pro SP2

At the weekend, my sister bought a pc from a computer fair complete with software disks including a pukka XP Pro CD. Since then, we have connected to braodband and all is well, except it has started coming up with 'Uploads are available' messages. She was keen to download SP2 and started the download process. When it came to install , she received a message to the effect that it was an illegal copy of XP pro and that the SP2 could not be installed. She thought of trying to reinstall from her cd, but it will not allow her to. She obviously has no idea if the disk she has was the one that the machine was configured from, but does not want the hassel of reformatting the hard drive.

Is there any way to get SP2 on her machine ??

yintsinmerite,

Does her CD Key start:

FCKGW.....

If it does, you have a pirated copy of WinXP. (Do not worry, all is not lost, we can get you a Licence for WinXP to make it legal.)

Take Care,

Richard

Unless it's from a company like Dell, legitimate WindowsXP CD's have fancy holographic designs on them too. Check out the link below for more tips.

No, and in fact, last night, she went through format/reinstall etc. on the PC with the disk and all worked well. Of course, we dont know if that is the one used to do the original install.

Alls well that ends well though

I would have thought the pirated copies ID would be more likely to start with FCKWG, but maybe they like putting the surname first!
