Back-up Drive

I've decided to go down the route of a complete removable additional drive (which is quite an economical way to go), that I shall use for backing up as much of my data as possible. Can anyone give any hints as to what, and how much (for example, progammes?), I should be looking to back up for disaster recovery. Presumably, not system files?

True Image is the way to go. It will work where Ghost will fail when copying to External Hard Drives.
